When will my baby start to crawl?

Posted by Emma Weldon on

Watching your baby grow and develop is a special time in the lives of new parents. Each milestone, from them starting to crawl to their first words, is an important and emotional occasion that new parents tend to cherish, even as their children eventually grow into adulthood.

However, crawling isn't just about physical growth; it's a leap in their cognitive development too. As your baby explores and gains some mobility for the first time, they're problem-solving, learning cause and effect, and figuring out the world around them.  Those first wobbly attempts at crawling might be different from how you imagined with babies choosing to army scoot, bum shuffle, roll over and over to get to where they are going or even crawl backwards while they work out how to coordinate their movements, but don't worry! These early crawls are monumental steps (or should we say crawls?) in their development.

When do babies first start crawling?

There's no single answer to this question. Every baby develops at their own pace, and crawling can begin anywhere between 6 months and 1 year old. Some little ones might surprise you by crawling much earlier, while others take their time, preferring to master the art of rolling or scooting before moving on to coasting (moving around on their feet holding on to the furniture). The most important thing is to remember that there's no need to compare your baby to others. Trust their journey, celebrate their unique achievements, and enjoy the precious moments as they explore their newfound freedom.

So, how can you support your baby's crawling adventures? It is important to create a safe and stimulating environment. Clear a crawl space in your living room, removing any clutter or hazards. Cover the floor with a soft play mat to cushion those tumbles and get the stair gate ready to make exploration safer and more comfortable.

5 of the best age-appropriate toys for when your baby starts to crawl

As your baby starts to crawl, age-appropriate toys become even more critical. These toys should not only be safe but also encourage exploration, stimulate the senses, and help refine those newfound motor skills. Placing them just out of reach can encourage babies to find a way to move towards them, if they are ready to start their crawling adventure, but don't push it if they are not ready yet. Here are 5 of our top picks for toys that will keep your little crawler entertained and engaged:

  • Shape Sorters: Shape sorters are classic toys for a reason. They come in all shapes and sizes, with colourful pieces that fit through corresponding holes. Crawling babies love the challenge of figuring out which shape goes where, helping to develop problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination. Plus, the satisfying clunk when a piece falls into place is a delightful reward for their efforts.

  • Stacking Toys: Stacking toys are another fantastic option for little crawlers. Whether it's brightly coloured cups, soft building blocks, or wobbly towers, these toys encourage exploration and experimentation. As your baby grasps, stacks, and knocks down the towers, they're strengthening their motor skills and learning about cause and effect.

  • Rattles: Rattles are a timeless classic for a reason. The bright colours and captivating sounds capture your baby's attention, encouraging them to reach, grasp, and shake. This simple action helps to develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Plus, the rhythmic rattle can be a soothing companion for your little explorer.

  • Musical Toys: Maracas offer a similar sensory experience to rattles, or toys that can be banged such as a xylophone or drum (or upside down saucepans with a wooden spoon) can be great options for babies at this age. As your baby shakes the maracas or bangs the drums, they're not only developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination but also discovering cause and effect while they influence their world by filling it with noise. Due to a baby's short attention span, the noise won't last long but can be a lot of fun for the duration of the concert!

  • Pop Up Toys: Jack-in-the-boxes or toys that pop up when a button is pressed or a dial is twisted are a delightful surprise for crawling babies. The anticipation of the pop-up toy combined with a playful melody creates a moment of pure joy. These toys not only capture your baby's attention but also encourage them to reach out and explore, further developing their motor skills and coordination.
