Ho! Ho! Ho! 'Tis the season to be jolly! But whether you’re first-time parents or you’re introducing a new baby brother or sister to older siblings, having a newborn this time of year can make even the best-laid festive plans suddenly feel impossible.
If your to-do list is starting to feel more overwhelming than magical (gift shopping, decorating, meal planning, plus coming up with wild new Elf-antics for bigger kids), you might be feeling less “Merry Christmas” and more “Bah Humbug.”
But with a little patience and a focus on what really matters, you can have a stress-free, merry and manageable Christmas – to be enjoyed by everyone – including you!
See our top tips below, and you’ll see it’s as easy as One, Two, Three!
- Simplify Gifting!
Shopping for gifts, while caring for a baby can be daunting. Get organised by writing a list (including a budget spreadsheet). Shop online, in-between feeds and naps, then before you know it, you’ll be done.
Take advantage of online retailers who offer gift wrapping services too and that’s another task ticked off and taken care of.
If you’re stuck for gift ideas, why not opt for experiences such as family memberships to the zoo or an online magazine or streaming service subscription? Buying for a family with a new baby? If you’ve already gifted them one of our fabulous hampers, how about giving the gift of delicious, readymade home made meals, delivered directly to new parents at their home with Cook Vouchers!
- Think Family Time, Me-Time and Free Time!
Christmas can be a whirlwind of activity, but it’s important to take time out when needed. A quiet moment to relax and savour the peace can be all you need to re-charge and re-focus. As a parent of a newborn, don’t feel bad if you need to say ‘no’ to social invitations, if they feel too overwhelming.
A low-key Christmas might be exactly what your family needs this year. If friends or relatives offer to host or lend a hand, graciously accept—it could give you some much-needed time to breathe and unwind.
And amidst all the festive excitement, remember to care for yourself. A well-rested and happy parent is the best gift you can give your baby. Take breaks, eat well, and sneak in some “me time” whenever you can. And if, during that blissful in-between time between Christmas and New Year when no one knows what day it is, you find yourself curled up on the couch with a warm drink, snacks, and a festive movie, know that this is perfectly okay—no guilt required!
- Preparation is Key
If you are designated Head Chef this Christmas, prepping and freezing food in advance can make all the difference! Use quieter moments, like baby’s naptime, to prepare and freeze parts of the traditional Christmas Dinner in advance. Stuffing, pigs in blankets, and even the gravy can all be made ahead of the big day. We love this Get Ahead Gravy Recipe from the wonderful Jamie Oliver. It’s an absolute Game-Changer!
Don’t shy away from shortcuts either. Most supermarkets offer excellent ready-prepared sides and desserts that can save you valuable time. In the lead-up to Christmas, stick to simple, fuss-free meals like casseroles, slow-cooker dishes, or one-pan recipes. Pre-cut or frozen veggies, frozen sides, and readymade desserts can be lifesavers. And remember, the food doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful—a cozy, simple meal enjoyed together can be just as special as a gourmet spread. Beans on toast (with melted cheese), anyone?
